摘要
English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) is widespread in global higher education, particularly in non-English-speaking contexts like Taiwan. While EMI is often associated with improving students’ English proficiency, its impact extends far beyond language learning, especially at the graduate level.
In this talk, I draw on my personal experience as a PhD graduate in Statistics in the United States and my current role as a university professor to examine the realities of learning and conducting research in English. I will discuss the challenges students face, including cognitive load, limited participation in academic discussions, and a lack of confidence in presenting their ideas. More importantly, I will argue that EMI should not be viewed as a measure of language proficiency, but as a tool for developing academic thinking and communication. By reframing EMI in this way, we can better support graduate students in strengthening both their research capacity and their academic voice in a global context.
